Solar Energy for People and Climate

Solarenergie Solafrica

Why solar energy is crucial worldwide

Every day, more solar energy reaches the earth than humanity could consume in an entire year. It is inexhaustible, climate-friendly and available almost everywhere – from the rooftops of large cities to remote villages. Unlike fossil fuels, it does not require endless transportation routes or gigantic power plants: electricity from solar energy is generated where it is needed.

In times of climate crisis, solar energy is a key to the solution: around three quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy system – that is, from electricity, heating, transportation and industry – caused almost entirely by the combustion of coal, oil and gas. Solar power, by contrast, is generated without emissions and supports international climate targets. Moreover, it has become one of the cheapest sources of electricity – thanks to a massive drop in the cost of solar modules and battery storage.

Solar energy is not just a technical solution, but a social force: it creates new jobs, opens up opportunities for young people and strengthens the economic independence of entire regions.

Facts about global solar energy

Why Africa is at the center

For many regions in Africa, solar energy is more than an option – it is a necessity. Large areas are not connected to central power grids. Instead of waiting for expensive grid infrastructure, schools, health stations or small businesses can be supplied directly with solar power. This brings light into classrooms, cools medicines in clinics and generates income through small workshops or stores.

Decentralised solar systems are flexible, quickly ready for use and independent of state supply. They combine climate protection with tangible development – locally and immediately.

How Solafrica creates impact with solar energy

Solafrica combines the global strength of solar energy with local commitment. Our projects are about much more than technology: they are about education, health and new perspectives.

  • People at the center: Solar experts trained by Solafrica – many of them young women – install systems that change lives.

  • Lasting impact: Schools, health centres and entire villages receive reliable electricity – permanently and long-term.

  • Equal Partnerships: In collaboration with local organisations, we focus on education, knowledge exchange and local responsibility.

Our work shows: When solar energy is used correctly, it has a double effect – it protects the climate and creates real prospects for people in disadvantaged regions. Read about how solar energy creates a future in our projects.

Insight into our projects

Kenya

Women in Kenya are learning solar technology and creating new independence for themselves. With their knowledge, they are bringing light into their communities and opening up new opportunities.

Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo

Solar power brings light to rural health centres, which are often the first port of call for women and children in particular. This makes medical help safer – especially for births and emergencies at night.

Ethiopia

Young adults in Ethiopia are building their own future by training in solar technology. They supply schools, health centers and villages with sustainable energy.
