Climate Caravan
Solar energy for better basic medical care
Solafrica has been active in Cameroon with the Climate Caravan since 2010. In the last phase (2019-2023), the focus was on improving basic medical care in rural health centers through solar energy.
Context and challenges
The Climate Caravan has shown how crucial electricity is for a functioning healthcare system. Illuminated rooms enable safe treatments and births, solar refrigerators cool vaccines and medicines, and savings in diesel and maintenance costs allow health centers to cover other important expenses.
57 Health centers
were equipped with a total of 51 solar-powered refrigerators and 21 solar systems.
Over 160,000 people
received improved healthcare as a result.
Around 70,000 francs
were saved because the solar fridges were tax-exempt by the Ministry of Health.
The training of healthcare staff and cooperation with local solar companies ensures the long-term operation of the facilities – a sustainable contribution to improving healthcare in Cameroon.
The experience from Cameroon flowed directly into the Santé Solaire program, which is being implemented in Burkina Faso, Niger and Togo.
