Mobile Solar Learning

With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the vocational schools in our project countries were closed and all training activities of the Solar Learning projects were interrupted. In response, we built a digital learning platform with local partner organisations.

In many countries, start-ups were developing technical solutions for digital teaching. There was not yet a specific application for solar technology. Therefore, we developed a learning platform for mobile devices on the topic of solar energy and disseminated it.

During conducting an initial needs assessment regarding e-learning in our project countries, we found that many trainees don’t have laptops. Most students, on the other hand, have a mobile or smart phone. Therefore, the developed learning platform is designed for mobile devices.

Goals

On the one hand, the aim was to make teaching materials more readily available and, on the other, to increase the exchange between the training programmes in various African countries. With the learning platform, hundreds of young people received the necessary theoretical tools to subsequently complete their vocational training in solar technology.

Activities

In autumn 2020, a needs analysis and a test training with the digital learning platform was conducted. At the beginning of January 2021, the vocational schools were able to resume their training operations and the digital learning platform was integrated into the training programme for solar technicians.

The digital training course offers many advantages: On the one hand, the availability and topicality of the learning content as well as the exchange between students and teachers can be improved. On the other hand, students can learn flexibly and independently of location. In addition, the contact between the solar experts and the teachers is maintained even after the students have left school. In 2021 and 2022, the digital training was extended to other countries and made available to other organisations.

In Kenya, four classes have already completed the training with the digital learning platform. In Tanzania, a pilot training was conducted for 24 young people. During the week, trainees were able to work independently on the theory of solar technology. At the weekend, practical lessons took place on site at a vocational school.

Mobile Solar Learning is now an integrated part of our other Solar Learning projects.
