Infrastructure
Without electricity, many basic needs remain unfulfilled: no light for learning, no refrigeration for medication, giving birth in the dark. Energy poverty is a key cause of poverty, insecurity and a lack of prospects. People who are already disadvantaged – such as women and children – are particularly affected.
Solar energy provides charitable institutions with a reliable source of electricity. Together with our local partners, we plan projects that are tailored to specific local needs. To ensure that the systems work in the long term, we use robust, durable materials, train the local population in how to use the systems and organise professional maintenance. In this way, we create local responsibility, strengthen confidence in solar energy and lay the foundations for a stable, climate-friendly infrastructure.
The results are as diverse as the contexts in which we work: A solar system at a rural health centre in Togo provides light so that births can be safely attended even at night. In Kenya, widows operate solar-powered grain mills, generate their own income and thus remain independent. And in the Kakuma refugee camp (Kenya), solar panels on a school ensure that children can do their homework in the evening. Where solar power flows reliably, new opportunities are created: for health, education and economic self-determination.
Our infrastructure projects
Santé Solaire
Solar Energy for a Refugee Camp
have already been solarised in our programme Santé Solaire. This has given 438,000 people access to better healthcare.
Even in remote areas, people should be able to meet their basic needs – and electricity is an essential part of this. Every project creates not only access to energy, but also confidence in sustainable, local solutions. Help us to bring light, security and opportunities to places where electricity changes lives.
