Our history
"The story of Solafrica began in 2009 with a few solar panels installed by five young people on the roof of Barack Obama's grandmother in Kenya. In 2025, 160 young Kenyans will complete their training as solar specialists. This development fills me with gratitude and gives me courage: Solafrica shows that small steps can lead to big changes."
Kuno Roth, Co-Präsident Solafrica
Grandma Obama makes history
The story of Solafrica began in 2009 on the roof of a house in Kenya. More precisely: on the rooftop of Sarah Obama’s house, the now deceased grandmother of the former American president.
Shortly before the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Greenpeace wanted to draw Barack Obama’s attention to the potential of renewable energies. As part of an educational project, local young people quickly installed a solar system on his grandmother’s roof. In return, Sarah Obama wrote a letter to her famous grandson.
Solafrica was born out of this campaign. We are now active in various African countries with our innovative projects. The goal remains the same: to provide access to renewable and sustainable energy in economically disadvantaged regions while protecting the climate.
