We were active in the Congo Basin rainforest with the Climate Caravan from 2010 to 2023. During this time, many families, schools and health centres were equipped with solar systems. The project has now been completed.
In southern Cameroon, where the rainforest of the Congo Basin begins, many people have no access to clean water, electricity or comprehensive healthcare. Between 2019 and 2023, the Climate Caravan focused on the electrification of rural health centres. This is because the lack of electricity is a major problem for medical care in many areas of Cameroon: Vaccines and other heat-sensitive medicines cannot be stored in the warm temperatures. Treating patients is also made more difficult without electric light.
From April 2019 to December 2023, the Climate Caravan will focus on the project “Solar energy for better basic medical care in rural health centres”. With the help of solar energy, remote health centres were supplied with ecologically sustainable electricity, thereby improving the living conditions of the rural population.
Within three years, the innovative SolarChill refrigerator, which is solar-powered and runs without a battery, was installed in selected health centres. This allows medicines and vaccines to be cooled even in areas without a power supply. Solar systems for lighting have also been installed. The installations were accompanied by further training to anchor the expertise locally.
