With school project weeks, Jugendsolar creates multifaceted experiences around solar energy for young people of career choice age. In workshops, the electricity consumption of everyday objects is measured, small solar cars are created, political debates are simulated, and the decarbonization process is vividly presented. As a highlight of the week, the students can assist directly in the installation of a solar system on the roof of a nearby solar construction site.
The Swiss solar industry is growing and already suffers from a shortage of qualified workers. In addition, numerous young people, for example with the “Fridays for Future,” are demanding that society takes concrete action to combat climate change. With Jugendsolar, they can make their own contribution to the energy transition and acquire knowledge about solar energy. This also raises awareness of solar energy in the young people’s environment.
Jugendsolar aims to get the energy transition on track by making solar professions known, turning young people into actors instead of spectators, and providing basic knowledge about the energy transition. The potential for solar energy should be promoted among the public and old prejudices should be clarified.
During the project weeks, the students learn about solar energy, develop career perspectives and become actors in the future of energy. They get to help with the installation of a solar system on a roof. On the construction site, they are guided and supported by a local solar company. The project week is complemented by workshops in which the students experience solar technology and the energy transition in a theoretical and practical way. In this way, Jugendsolar conveys problem awareness and expertise for solving the energy crisis and eliminates prejudices and resistance against renewable energies. At the inauguration of the solar plant, parents, community representatives, local businesses and the press come together to build momentum for the energy transition.
